Land rights registration in Tanzania: one small experience

The small two room building had no window or door frames yet and the floor was packed earth.  The roof of zinc sheets was half green; a young man on a rickety ladder busy painting. The humble building stood out as a large investment in the village of Jungu in Tanzania with its houses of eroded mud and wood frames most topped with rough grass to keep out the sun and some of the rain.

High Level Meeting on Investments in Land IN Africa. Lusaka 4-5 Oct

This High Level Forum on Land-Based Foreign Direct Investments in Africa, to be held in Lusaka, Zambia from 4 to 5 October,  is convened by the AU Land Policy Initiative working with the AU Commission, AfDB, and UNECA. It is an important moment and opportunity to define a clear African position on foriegn investments in land in Africa. Oxfam is facilitating an input on the impact on women, see attached TOR.  Please share with me ideas you have for this input.

Land Grabs, Zero Sum Game by Nidhi Tandon

Here is a revised presentation from Nidhi Tandon, it has more notes to explain the presentation, it won't be as good as having been in the conference for the presentation, but you can get the idea.  Key points for me where the fact that we are in a global transition in terms of energy use, moving from fossil fuels to agricultural fuels.  Historically such an important shift in energy use has alwasy brought great social and political change: which way will this go now?  Also 'legal is not always legitimate'.

Oxfam holds Pan-African launch of its global GROW campaign.

 As part of the African Women’s Land Rights Conference there was on the evening of 1st June a launch of Oxfam’s new GROW campaign (http://www.oxfam.org/grow).  This is a campaign for ‘food justice in a resource constrained world’ aiming to ensure that everyone on the planet has enough to eat always.  Irungu Houghton the Oxfam Pan Africa Director who was master of ceremonies initiated in Kiswahili what became the slogan for the evening: “Chakula, haki yetu (food, our right)! Maisha, haki yetu (Life, our right)!

Committed to African women's land rights

It is 15.30 on day 4 of the African Women's Land Rights Conference where over 160 people, 90% African Women, have been meeting to find ways to ensure that they advance African Women's Land Rights.  We are now finalising the communique and plan of action.  The still high level of engagement a demonstration of the high level of commitment to continue the struggle for women's land rights and to work together on this.
